Affluent ‘Island Suburbia’
Wilmington Island is a highly sought-after area just outside of Historic Savannah. Some residents call it “island suburbia”, as the communities on the Island form this large and affluent suburb of Savannah, where most residents work. The island lies just east of Savannah between the city of Thunderbolt, and the beach community of Tybee Island.
It’s been said that the causeways that connect the Island to the mainland were not necessarily meant for transporting people. During prohibition, the bridges were built across the large expanses of marsh for the sole purpose of having a land bridge to transport alcohol on and off small boats!
The residents of the Island are thankful for those who built these causeways, because they made it easy and convenient to get to Savannah and the other islands! A typical drive to Historic Savannah via the Islands’ Expressway is roughly 20 minutes, where you’ll have access to everything you can think of, including wonderful musical concerts, gorgeous city parks, movie theaters, and awesome restaurants and bars. And if you’re headed to the beach, you’re in luck, as Tybee Island is only 10 minutes away!
Small Town Feel
Wilmington Island has a strong sense of community, similar to that of a small town. The center of town is filled with residential buildings and single-family homes. It’s a quaint area with terrific restaurants, two supermarkets, and an assortment of retail stores. While you can walk and bike around this area, you would need to travel by car to get into Savannah.
The Island is mostly residential with beautiful forested neighborhoods, an abundance of parks and recreational facilities. Young families are often attracted to the area because of the coveted public and private schools.
It’s important to know that Georgia allows a child to attend any school of the parents choosing within the Savannah-Chatham county public school district or outside of the district, as long as there is room and the receiving district agrees to accept the student.
Some of the schools within this district offer specialized programs such as, math, technology, design, medical and allied health, visual and performing arts and more. Additionally, there are terrific charter schools including or Coastal Empire Montessori Charter for grades K-5 and Oglethorpe Academy from grades 6-8. There is always the choice of a private school should your budget allow.
Condo’s, Single-family Homes and Amazing Multi-Million Dollar Mansions
In 1926 Henry Walthour built the General Oglethorpe Hotel on the Wilmington River. Supposedly, construction was financed by, none other than, Al Capone! Later, the hotel became the Savannah Inn and Country Club, and then the Sheraton Hotel. After closing in the 1980s, it sat vacant for many years, until being totally remodeled as ‘Wilmington Plantation’, a luxury condominium conversion with spectacular and expansive views of the river. As one of the most desirable addresses (and tallest building) on the Savannah Islands, Wilmington Island Plantation is loaded with amenities including pool and fitness, marina and the Wilmington Island Golf Club is located just next door. This club offers a wonderfully designed Donald Ross golf course; six lighted tennis courts, swimming pool, children’s pool, Nautilus-equipped fitness center, as well as an excellent restaurant.
