Land Sought After for Centuries
It all began in 1733, General Oglethorpe landed on the bluff of the Savannah River. He was authorized by the King of England to establish a fort on the northeast end of Skidaway Island (now Priest Landing Marina) to defend against the Spanish. In 1758, Half Moon Village was established on the southwest end of the island. The land changed hands numerous times prior to the Revolutionary War. Eventually the property was taken by the state of Georgia on March 1, 1778, when the owners, who were Loyalists, returned to England.
For more than a century, the land changed ownership. Then, in 1927, Thomas W. Lufburrow bought the land adjoining Union Camp (later the original Landings), extending from the Burnside River to Franklin Creek. Unfortunately, during the great Depression, he was forced to sell his property, and was devastated. After the war, Lufburrow, Jack Bryant and Judge Emanuel Lewis gradually began to buy land on Skidaway and eventually owned from the Union Camp line to the southern marshes.
In 1969, when the bridge was being built, Lufburrow’s two partners decided to sell. Lufburrow kept his portion of the land, which, after his death in 1970, was amicably divided amongst family. While there was intial difficulty getting the main road opened, it was finally cleared in 1982, and accessed as a dirt road. On December 16, 1985, a contract was signed for the improvements for the first phase of South Harbor. South Harbor got underway in January, 1986. And the rest, is history
