A Treasure Yesterday and Today
Legend has it that a chest of Blackbeard’s booty was buried somewhere near the bluff in the old Bucknife area by a man named Gnol, of Normandy, France. Supposedly, Gnol was the leader of 17 castaways abandoned by the infamous Blackbeard in 1716. Of course, the chest was never found – so know one is certain if this story is fact or fiction. Maybe it’s simply a colorful tale originating from a place that is so rich in history! (Information provided by Long Point resident, Mac Merritt)
Long Point Plantation might be better recognized for its historical and archaeological research potential. You see, during the days of the Revolutionary War, the area around Long Point’s pool and tennis courts was originally a farming plantation named Bucknife. This plantation held it’s own, and was economically sustained through its livestock, cotton, and crops. While it was believed that there were 5 original structures on the land, only one small, brick structure is still standing at the site. Sadly a bulldozer dumped many of the remaining traces from Bucknife into nearby Gray’s Creek. Years ago, bricks from one of the early settler’s homes were fished out of the creek, close to where the dock is now located. This site offers an amazing opportunity to study a small plantation settlement from centuries ago, and eventually it was listed in the National Register in March, 1986.
Today, while there might not be any actual pirate’s treasure here, the residents of Long Point believe they are sitting on one!
