Located along the Intercoastal Waterway about 20 minutes from Savannah’s historic downtown, the community of Dutch Island offers natural coastal real estate in Savannah with a beauty and charm all its own. Once a plantation, then the site of a failed airplane factory, Dutch Island today is a residential haven for those who prefer the quiet, serene coastal lifestyle.
About Dutch Island
Dutch Island’s history goes back to colonial times, when King George III granted Peter Radick a 30-acre plot to build his plantation. For many decades, only a handful of such plantations existed on this 500-square-acre island until the early 1900s, at the dawn of flight, when an ambitious entrepreneur built an airplane factory here with dreams of building a cross-Atlantic aircraft. Several failures and a lawsuit later, the factory burned to the ground, and Dutch Island fell into obscurity until the late 1960s, when a company first envisioned the island as a place for upscale residential coastal development preserving the natural ecology. Today, Dutch Island is just that: A quiet gated community of 480 homes set on large lots, where residents enjoy a relaxed pace of living in harmony with their natural surroundings.
